W is for Website

When I started making beads, and had chosen a studio name to make under... I bought my Domain Name immediately - see N for that particular story, more to secure it rather than with any thought about doing something with it.

After all, I wasn't 100% sure about having a website; it's just me making some beads and would there really be any worthwhile content to justify it?

Very recently I randomly bumped into someone who I'd first met last Summer, we had had a fabulous conversation about art and creating things, and she had really inspired me at the time.  I haven't seen her since, until last month - when we continued with our conversation as if the intervening 7 months hadn't happened... that second conversation inspired me to come home and finish the website.

Now, whenever I chat with someone about making my own beads and they invariably ask the question "Do you have a Website?" now I can finally answer - Yes! it's here...

I wonder what will happen if I bump into her a third time?

Have you had a random meeting with someone
that's inspired you to do/finish something?

  1. Nice clean website :)

I always find when I sit and chat to other writers that I want to go off and write something. I used to go to a writers' convention where we'd sit around for 3 days and chat on different subjects in panels chaired by volunteers. I used to come away from there brim full of ideas - the trick is to keep the momentum up after a six hour drive home :)

    1. Consider it said and read then ;) and ditto on the reply lol!

My drive home from Flame Off was a bit longer, and I still haven't properly unpacked... I read a comment last week where someone said "everyone who came to Flame Off will have had a chance to try out the new colours..." Whilst I keep peeking at them I've not lit my torch since as I've been too busy with the day job, college, the A to Z and catching up with my Born of Fire group! I keep saying next month it will be easier!

  3. I worked for 15 years as a web designer so I have several web sites of my own. If you don't have a web presence I don't know how you do business these days.

    1. I tend to communicate mostly online but I was getting to the stage where it was getting a bit embarrassing not having a website, somewhere to bookmark for people who might not be on the same social media platforms.

I think it will be a good place for me to showcase my work and for people to find out more about what I do in a "static" format, and it will build as I build up a body of work. I've been taking some photos at college today (my luxury short course that I'm doing) that came out quite well so I think the website will be a work in progress of my progress. Today is the first day that I've thought about how to expand it (whilst keeping it simple!), so it's been inspiration all round.

  4. The website looks great!

I had a chance meeting once in Zion National Park (in Utah). My husband and I were tent camping. I was up early and it was cold, so I was sitting in our truck reading when I looked up and saw a couple walking past. Without thinking or missing a beat I jumped out of the truck and called their names -- they were friends of ours from New Zealand. The chance meeting didn't inspire me to do anything, but we did have a lovely time with them in Zion and again in Las Vegas.

    Cheers, Stephanie

    1. How lovely, I have a long story which I'll try to keep short...

My husband and I spent our honeymoon attending the wedding (abroad) of an old friend of mine. We spotted a billboard for a singer, my husband thought it looked like an old uni friend, the person who gave us a lift to the wedding had just moved... next door to said singer. We wrote a note on the back of a napkin (no paper to hand) with our mobile number - turns out it was said person and they got in touch, they also live and work on that island and it made our honeymoon! A few years later we went to their wedding!

    1. Thanks for visiting.

It took so long as I'm not web inclined, I'd found a basic template I was happy to adapt but deciding what to put on it was the challenge!

  6. I love web design and tinkering to get it just the way I want :)

I can't think of any random meetings that have inspired me, but I hope that you run into your friend again seeing the wonderful things that she has inspired you to do!

    1. I really do know nothing about web design, but I knew I wanted something fairly clean and simple with only a few pages. I'd found a template I could adapt but I wasn't happy with it for months, kept tinkering but it wasn't something I wanted to publish!

It took me months (and that 2nd conversation) to figure out finally how to present the home page. In hindsight it seems obvious :) I think it was because I'm not intended to sell from the website I couldn't quite figure out what it was going to do for me.

I really could have done with your skills!

I love saying hi to people who've read my blog, or are just passing through via the A to Z, or anyone not a spam bot!

P.s. If you use an iPad/iPhone and are having trouble leaving a comment on Blogger, you might have better luck using a browser that's not the default iPad one... Then from the "Comment as" drop down menu choose Name/Url (you can leave URL field blank or add your web address) or Anonymous and (hopefully) away you go! Mars xx
