Eske Storm Dragon Claw for Sue

In the past the posts that have marked the 100s have seen me looking at the links between jewellery and something more meaningful than just the "ooh shiny" part of enjoying jewellery.  I've decided to carry on the tradition for Post No. 300.

Back in 1992, I bumped into my Uncle who, being only 4 years older than me and growing up only a few doors down, has always been more like an older brother to me than a uncle.

I was really taken with the lady he was sat next to.  Spiky blond hair, nails you could cut steak with and she was wearing the most incredible silver jewellery.

Yes, my ooh shiny habit has been with me for many years!

Sue was sassy, warm, interesting, had a twinkle in her eye and a beautiful Welsh accent.

When she went to the ladies, I leant to one side and in a conspiratorial whisper said "I really like your new girlfriend" shortly followed by "Whatever you do, do not let this one go!".  They had such a spark between them.

What I didn't know, is that they weren't a couple, they had literally just met.

I *really* didn't believe this, as if Disney had drawn animations around them - it would have been all cupids shooting arrows, animals bounding around and big hearts appearing like bubbles.  I've never actually seen two people fall in love in quite such glorious technicolour.

Over the years we've often spoken about that night and told that story because I was *so* disbelieving that they weren't already a couple.

From that point on they became inseparable and spent a very fantastic 22 years together, travelling, emigrating, travelling and generally just being there for each other.  I'd always described them to friends who'd not met them, as... if the world were to fall apart, and they were the last two humans on the planet, as long as they had each other they would be fine.

And then the world did fall apart, only they weren't the last two humans left.  Sadly Sue died very unexpectedly last October and left the rest of us behind in shock.

In the days that followed we spent a lot of time catching up in the UK; we talked about life back then, now and in the future and I was asked to choose myself a piece of jewellery in memory of Sue.

I've been thinking long and hard about this gift.  The plan was to buy a bead, however I couldn't quite find anything that really spoke to me enough with regard to Sue - plus I change my bracelets around quite often and didn't want something to be sitting in my jewellery box between bracelets.

Finally I turned away from the bigger brands and went back to more artisan designers and decided on a piece by Eske Storm.  The female dragon claw was a perfect fit for what I was looking for.

I'm currently wearing this on a Trollbeads Leather Necklace but expect to see this appear on bracelets and bangles in the future!

My Eske Storm Dragon Claw for Sue

My gift covered more than just the claw... I wasn't sure what to do with the rest until I saw Ohm's Rawr release, Sue will now also be remembered by helping to fund some dinosaur skulls in silver... Given that she once bought an actual human glass eye as a ring... I think she would have approved of my choices.

Have you ever bought jewellery in memory of someone?
How did you choose what to pick?

My Valentine's Bracelet as it was meant to be

You may recall that I mentioned in my Valentine's Day Bracelet Post that there was a 3rd (and final) version of this bracelet planned but that 1 of the beads didn't arrive in time...

The story was that I'd ordered, paid and had my package delivered in good time for Valentine's Day but 1 of the beads was accidentally left out, luckily the shop still had it and rushed it out to me with a free gift but despite their amazingly quick response it still didn't quite make it by the 14th.

These were the beads reunited and I've tried several times to take photos of them but they are incredibly difficult to capture in a photo, complicated by the fact that I have a new phone so I'm still learning how to take macro shots on it.  I've kept true to the original idea of the blog that these are the mobile phone photos I share with friends but sometimes I wonder if I'm just making life a lot more complicated than it actually needs to be!

And here's my favourite photo of this bracelet, taken on the neck of a particularly nice bottle of red wine I was about to open!

Valentine's Day Bracelet

My Valentine's Day Bracelet is centered around my Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund bead, and it was put together as a tribute to my late Father-in-Law.  All the beads have been chosen to show off the RAFBF bead as the focal point of the bracelet.

This is the second version of this bracelet, as the first didn't include the Cancer & Pisces Zodiac Birthstone Stars for his birthday.  There was (and still is) a third version that was planned but unfortunately one of the two beads I'd ordered to complete it didn't quite make it here in time!

One Day Later...

My silver Forget-me-not arrived! Yesterday I wrote about why I wanted to collect this bead and 1 day later it appeared. (Great service from Joshua James Jewellery as usual)

It's a fabulously heavy bead and actually much larger than I remembered.  I like beads that are asymmetric and as seen between 2 of the big glass beads below you get an idea of the size of this beauty.  Those who knew the friend I wrote of yesterday will appreciate it's a "big chunk of silver".

Forget-me-not...

For new friends and old, and for those I never met but who touched the lives of people I care about. None of them will ever be forgotten.  Just missed.

This lovely silver bead is one I have been considering since I found trollbeads back last Summer.  I decided to order it today, because it marks both the second anniversary of a friend's passing and through other news I've been reflecting on people who pass through your life, sometimes very briefly, but who leave a resonance with you that stays remembered long after that time passes.

In memory of

A year ago on 14th February 2011 my father in law passed away; it all happened very quickly but we had our time to say goodbye.  We were coming up to the first anniversary that February and this, plus my rapidly growing interest in trollbeads were both on my mind.

On 1st February 2012 Trollbeads released a Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund bead, it wasn't limited edition, just very hard to get hold of as it's a very hard bead to make.

Did I mention that all trollbeads are made by hand by individual artisans who create each bead that you buy?

As my father in law was in the RAF, this seemed the perfect bead to remember him by, the timing was quite perfect and I received my RAFBF bead shortly after the anniversary.

When I have this bead on my bracelet it always gives me a great sense of joy and comfort, yes it's just a bead, but it always makes me smile when I see it and the memories that it evokes.

My Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund Bead, probably one of the most special beads (to me) in my collection
