B is for my Beadmaker Bead

B is for my Beadmaker Bead... the ultimate fix for any bead addict - have your own bespoke bead made espeically for you!!

Amanda was the lovely lampworker for Trollbeads (a brand of bead jewellery for the non jewellery AtoZ visitors) down at an event in Cambridge;  I spent a thoroughly lovely time watching her work her magic with the flame!

So much so that when it became time for Amanda to make my own bead... I was still mesmerised and hadn't decided what I wanted!

After much discussion, we settled on pinky purples and blacks in swirls... and now it was time to watch my own bead being created.  I won't labour on the details as I'll let the photos speak for themselves!

Then came the long wait whilst the bead was with Trollbeads to be cored.

It's always exciting to see if the annealed and cored bead matches what you thought it would look like from your memories of the night!

I love my beadmaker bead made by Amanda, and look how well it matches another lampworked bead I bought shortly after!

It only remains to decide what it's first bracelet will look like... I think I'm still mesmerised as I haven't decided on the final composition yet!

Have you ever had, or wanted to have, a bead made for yourself?
What did/would you choose and why?

Trollbeads Bangle for the Medically* Challenged

The new(ish) Trollbeads Bangle was introduced back in early November 2012, as part of the Christmas Collection, so you may be wondering why it's taken me so long to get around to talking about it?

I loved the look right from the start, a plain solid silver bangle, designed to be worn with a few beads that are kept on by stoppers.  It comes in 4 sizes, XS, S, M, L but buyer beware, it is definitely a try before you buy as a lot of people have been surprised to find they needed an XS bangle!

So what's stopped me?

Well first of all it was the price, £90 for the bangle on it's own, without stoppers.

This has been offset by some of the promotions from Trollbeads and retailers alike, firstly the buy a bangle get 2 free stoppers and more recently with the much coveted Aurora glass bead that's only officially available as a bangle set for £125.  Either way it's still a significant investment.  So, er, it was still the price that was putting me off.  I also really wanted an Aurora bead but I wasn't prepared to buy a bangle set just to get one.

Back in March I tried on a friend's S bangle, and here I realised why I was never going to get a bangle, I'm quite sensitive about my wrists and putting the bangle on and off made me want to both vomit and faint at the same time, even blogging about it I'm making sure I'm semi-prone on the sofa! (Not that I blog standing up or anything but you get my point)

So what on earth possessed me to finally buy one, an XS bangle, at our recent Troll Date?

Full Troll Meet Haul - stones, ooaks and finally a bangle!

I'm still not 100% sure, probably because I really wanted one, maybe it was the generous discount Beaverbrooks gave us on the day, possibly because I managed to try on Alison's without fainting or vomiting... I still felt rather uncomfortable, but mainly I think I finally went for it because they look SO good, which is a great motivator for wanting to try and get past my phobic aversion to putting it on and taking it off again (it's absolutely fine whilst on).

I didn't want my new bangle to just become an overpriced bead display stand for my blog photos - so how should I overcome my fear and more importantly my phobic reaction?

I wore my bangle out on the Friday night of the troll meet, with one bead and my stacked pink combo for Alison, it wasn't pleasant putting it on... luckily when it came to taking it off I was so tired (and full of cocktails) plus I was already in bed!

Friday's bangle - last day of May!

Therein a desensitisation plan was born, for those of you who've never had the misfortune to suffer from these types of reactions, I salute you, for those of you who have/do, you may understand my wish to overcome this, or you may just think I'm slightly crazy in that if it makes me feel that bad why bother in the first place?

As I said before I really like the bangle, and seeing so many on our Troll Date in person just strengthened my resolve to give it a proper go.  So my plan was simple, I'd try wearing it every day, and to help with the feelings it evoked I'd put it on and take it off in bed, therefore if I felt wobbly I would already be in a comfortable place!

I loved Saturday's combination, I wore it nestled in a twisted leather design with my new Summer Stones to show off to the girls on our night out.

Saturday's bangle, hello June!

I had a bit of a set back on the Sunday, so decided to give it a miss and try again on Monday!

Monday's trial went okay, bit of a problem getting it off *shudder* but no problems wearing it at work whilst typing all day!  I was really pleased as I've had the ooak above with it's lovely metallic buds for a while but it's not made it onto a bracelet, however the bangle is perfect for wearing single beads to show them off.

Tuesday I had to try the bangle with the Aurora bead I had kindly been sold by a friend who had two and only wanted one.

The Aurora bead was the original reason I was tempted to try the bangle, however it was quite ironic that I bought the two separately on the same weekend!

It was a really sunny day on the Tuesday, I took this whilst I was sat in the garden after work, the Aurora bead is lovely regardless but incredibly pretty in the sunshine!

So what to wear tomorrow?  I decided to try the bangle with 3 beads as I'd been wearing it with just one bead but I was feeling a bit braver about adding more.

This went well, and I've been getting a lot of good use out of my new ooak (unique) and time to use some of the new Summer Stones on here, 2 of my Rhyolites!

During the evening I tweeted a picture along with my snack for the evening, popcorn actually makes quite a good background... and my bangle was toasty warm when I put it back on!

After mastering 3 beads I decided to go for 5!  For Thursday I just added some ambers to my existing combination, I was out walking the dog and it was sunny again so I took a photo - this photo makes me laugh as the shadow shows you exactly the weird things I do when taking photos!

So Friday... end of the week, what to wear?  How about LOTS of Summer Stones!

Friday's bracelet - Canadian Jade triple with Zebra Jasper and Dalmatian Jasper

So I'd managed a week with the bangle bar one day, I'd tried 1, 3 and 5 bead combos and I'd not passed out or thrown up, so far so good.  Wearing 5 beads certainly makes the bangle a lot fuller, and harder to pull apart when taking off and putting on, not that you can move it much as it's solid silver - but it is possible to make it a little easier as it will move apart very slightly.

In experimenting with ways to wear my bangle I'd also tried different ways to put it on and off, the least worst way for me is to put it on above my wrist, via the inside of my wrist sideways on, about an inch above the wrist bone, and then slide it into place whilst twisting the opening to the back and then down to sit on my wrist under the wrist bone.  I can categorically say that my experiment in trying to put it on under the wrist bone was a disaster, I almost ended up with a bangle pierced hand... well I had to try everything!

After a week of solid wearing it was definitely getting a bit easier.  So to celebrate the previous 7 days/ways of wearing my bangle, Day 8 saw me with a no.7 cake!

Tasty!  What also happened on Day 8 was I received some new discounted beads , and not just the ones I was wearing that day from the Troll Date!

Finally I have a peacock and wasted no time the following day to showcase this on my bangle - Day 9!

So on Monday I decided to wear all 3 of my new new beads and let the train take the strain!

My cream galaxy, teal tiger and peacock beads from the Small and Beautiful beads

Tuesday's bangle was back to some of the Summer Stones and the ooak (unique) that matched so well!

Wednesday saw more Summer Stones, Canadian Jade again and a new stone, Agate Dendritic! I liked this so much I wore it Thursday too!

Friday and I wanted a change from the stones and new beads, back to some old favourites, 3 Organic Bubbles!

Saturday I came home to find a little parcel waiting for me, my new Luccicare bead, a magnificent fishy... guess what went straight on my bangle and is still there today?!

My current incarnation of my bangle with my Luccicare fishy as the focal point

And so my 2 week challenge comes to an end, after 2 weeks I'm now much more comfortable putting the bangle on and off, if I'm honest it still makes me a little green at times but it really has been worth putting the work in, so much so that over the last 2 weeks I've really had to struggle hard to not buy a 2nd bangle with another Aurora bead.  This is still probably the best deal if you want the bangle and the Aurora!

The only reason I'm holding off is cash right now, it's still an expensive investment and I have been spending my 3rd tax refund ever since my Troll Date (my first two refunds have been spent on sensible household items, bah!), but I do need to keep some money back for a little special something I have planned for myself in July, but more about that nearer the time...

*phobically challenged is probably the more correct terminology, as I don't have anything physically wrong with my wrists - it's just not such a catchy title!

Good things come in 3's - OOAKs (Uniques)

Before anyone worries too much that I've just broken my self-imposed bead embargo with my usual panache after blogging about it yesterday - the next series of beads are all pre-embargo beads, I'm just catching up with my blogging from April!

Front view of all 3 OOAKs: Green Glitter Swirl, Red/Pink Fern & Scroll, Blue & Teal Glitter Budded Python

My first OOAK arrived as part of a preloved bundle, it's a translucent swirl design - bright green translucent base, milky white with pale green and a hint of pink along the swirls and with really full plump gold glitter buds.  I've quite a few swirl and spinner beads now, some translucent like this one and a couple of opaque ones that you can see on my Valentine's Day Bracelet either side of my RAF Benevolent Fund Bead in the centre.  They come in a variety of designs so there's something to suit most folk if you like this style of bead.

The next bead was a raffle style knockout that I liked the look of and was lucky enough to have my name picked.  I'd been going through a red/pink phase so a bead that spanned both colours has definite appeal, I particularly like the 2 different patterns on each side of the bead, it has a fern pattern on the left hand side and a scroll pattern along the right hand side curve.  The core is red and is covered by a clear glass with the pattern sitting along the "top" of the bead.

My final and third OOAK is my favourite of this bunch, I have a fondness for budded pythons and this one is a particularly fine example from a most generous and lovely seller from the US.  It has the most vibrant blue translucent base, with teal scales and lightly glittered gold buds.  This one took a long time to reach me as it got held up for a particularly long time in customs but it was most definitely worth the wait when they finally released  it... maybe someone should have explained that not all pythons need a transport licence.

Side view of glitter budded python - my mobile phone camera has not done justice to these colours!

I have yet to use any of these in a bracelet as I am rather full on made up bracelets, it's getting towards the time for a big make and break marathon as I've no spare bracelets currently and I'm starting to get that twitch I get when I haven't made anything new for a while...

Pretty in Pink IV - Silver with Garnets, 3 Raspberry OOAKs, Thor's Hammer & a new bracelet design

I love Twitter, you can find me as The Trollbead Troll @TrollbeadBlog if you're so inclined...

Why the sudden declaration for Twitter?  Well it led me onto my next 2 beads... courtesy of Paul Gentile Jewellers in South Wales tweeting about their store in Cwmbran and alerting me to their sale!  I received fabulous customer service when I popped in, and I will certainly be returning next time I'm in the area as the staff were so lovely; it's great to visit a store where the staff have such a passion for Trollbeads...

Top - Thor's Hammer
Bottom - Silver with Garnets

When I returned  home from my trip a few days later, there were 3 more beads waiting for me courtesy of another favourite retailer of mine, Goldmine...  If you like a bargain you really should check out their Trunk Show which starts today and runs until the 29th April.  4 beads for the price of 3, $40 off the Aurora Bangle Limited Edition Set, the usual free bracelet with a decorative lock and a free travel case with orders over $125!

So, Silver Bead with Garnets and Thor's Hammer, combined with 3 new OOAKs from Goldmine and all of those Retired Red Pink Prisms and a new bracelet was conceived.

L-R from Lock: stopper, Retired Red Pink Prism (RRPP), Thor's Hammer, RRPP,
Raspberry and Glitter Heart OOAK, Scorpio and Aries Birthstone Star, RRPP, Raspberry Glitter Python,
Silver with Garnets, Raspberry Glitter Fern, RRPP, Scorpio and Aries Birthstone Star, Raspberry OOAK,
RRPP, Viking, Raspberry Armadillo, stopper, Freya Knot Lock.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend coming up, I will be keeping my fingers crossed for good weather for a wedding tomorrow - have a lovely day girls!  There are all the People's Bead finalists to vote for and I shall also be writing some more blog posts for the last weekend triple of April whilst trying not to spend a fortune with all these lovely tempting offers!  Have a great one folks!!

Ruby Rock

Ruby Rock was a bead released as part of the Mother's Day Collection of 3 beads on 1st March in the UK.

By coincidence I happened to pop into my Local Dealers (LD) on the day, and was disappointed to find that they were only carrying the 2 silver beads in the release and not Ruby Rock, which is the bead I was so excited about coming out.

Since writing my New Year's Bead Resolutions down for all to see, I've been focusing on what I want to achieve for myself, so regular readers will have noticed I've concentrated far less on the new releases, (as there are some great reviewing bloggers out there who are covering all of this so amazingly), and much more on my personal collecting habits.

Ruby Rock is a bead with multiple variations, I love stone type rocks and probably should have added my unspoken resolution to the official list, that I wanted to also start collecting the stones this year.  So far I've only bought Labradorite in the sales but Ruby Rock was most certainly next on my list - had my LD had any in that day there's a fair chance I would have come out with more than 1 as they are all quite different.

I, unlike many of my fellow collectors who are looking for very pinky stones, was looking for a mottled grey with hints of pink and purple to start with... as I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my first one.

I approached a retailer who I knew was happy to photograph individual stones and after describing what I was looking for they sent me front and back shots of 5 stones.  I quickly narrowed this down to 2 and after about an hour of deliberating chose 1.

I also picked up a lovely purple OOAK with swirly spots that I'd had on hold with them for a couple of weeks, I love Goldmine as they are so accommodating to their customers!  Be prepared for lots of photos whilst I show you the different aspects of it.

I made two bracelets with Ruby Rock as it came 2 days after my Chess Lock had arrived.  The first leather bracelet, the way of wearing the lock at the front was shamelessly copied from Mike Nand after seeing his Peacock Bracelet when he got his Chess Lock... yes we are so into our trollbeads we show each other photos as and when we get new goodies!  Now Mike has blogged his Peacock Bead I feel comfortable in showing you my copied front Chess Lock look!

However what I really wanted to do with Ruby Rock was add it to another bracelet I've already shown you and pair it with my other stone!

I've been good in one aspect that I've only bought 1 so far... but I'd watch this space!

Big and Beautiful - Navy Galaxy

In a previous post I explained all about the small and beautiful bead kits (or rather Leann at Charms Addict did) and how I still had several beads I really wanted.  My top most wanted was the Navy Galaxy; but try as hard as I could, I just could not get a small and beautiful one.

Then came what the community called the big and beautifuls.  Same style of beads but with a universal core (bigger holes to fit all the other branded bracelets and not just troll) and larger glass, closer to a Troll standard glass production bead size.  But I still couldn't score a Navy Galaxy even though they were less desirable to a lot of collectors due to the bigger core - some folk just really don't like Universal Cores, often shortened to UU rather than classic core CC if you wondered what all those acronyms stood for.

So it looked like I was never going to get my hands on one, then enter my trollfairy - who won the chance to get a knockout Big and Beautiful Navy Galaxy, and gave it to me for the retail price she paid for it - so given how hard it has been to get hold of this, I've been very lucky to have one at this price.

This was a really hard bead to photograph on it's own, however I had no problem using this in a bracelet!  Time for a new combination!

L-R from lock: stopper, Beach, Luccicare Bead, Artisan Bead (unknown), Libra and Sagittarius Zodiac Star,
Purple OOAK, Luccicare bead, Aquarius Zodiac Star, Blue & Black OOAK, Silver Wisdom,
Luccicare Bead,  Libra and Sagittarius Zodiac Star, Purple OOAK, Purple Python OOAK,
Aquarius Zodiac Star, Artisan Bead (unknown), Navy Galaxy, Blue Goldstone, stopper, Chess Lock

I've been wearing this one double stacked with another blues bracelet, but more on that very soon!
