N is for Naming

Choosing a name almost made me give up... I could make beads, I mastered coring, got over my fear of showing people what I'd made without apologising but finding a name to live with? Almost impossible!

Talking with other people it seems it's a common theme, apparently I'm not the only one who struggled with this.

The name I make beads under is Born of Fire, I'd got to the stage where I was running out of time to choose my trading name as I had to register this within 3 months of starting to sell beads.  Now it's chosen I am learning to not only live with it but to love it.

All the other names that I'd come up with, were often already taken, or were too narrow in definition of what I might make, or too silly to live with forever once the novelty wore off.

I've kept some of my notes as I'm going to get some of them in somewhere; probably as the name of a bead or a collection in the future - hence not telling you all the names I did consider just in case that contains a future spoiler!

What have you had to name, and how did you choose?

  1. I like it! I think it's a perfect name for making beads :)
I am absolutely horrible at names - which is often a problem, since I am both a role-player and a writer...

    1. Thanks! I can see why that might be an issue for you, I found choosing seriously hard.

  2. We had to name a boat which is a similar predicament to naming a business -- you have to live with it so it has to be just right. Believe it or not, it was a two year process for us!

    1. Yep I found it incredibly hard, things that sounded okay at first, I thought might not stand the test of time - I ended up giving myself a deadline in that I'd sold my first bead and needed to register a name within 3 months... but I'd been thinking about it for many months before that... good job I had a deadline or I might still be the nameless beadmaker!! (Also I needed a name that would suit glass other than beads too)

  3. I think your name is just perfect and those beads look fantastic - you are so talented in what you do!! I had to name the Nordic walking project I've just started and wanted something that would appeal to young and old - I finally settled on Ministry of Nordic Walks - I'm not quite sure whether people get it yet though? The real difficulty has been coming up with a logo that people understand!

    1. I love your new business name!! It would definitely appeal to me, quite the British quirky sense of humour :)

Thanks for your comments, it's taken me ages to start showing people what I do, but I'm so glad I am coming out of my glass closet!

  4. I've had to name a few websites, but in most cases the names came easily. My most recent blog came from a sort of nickname I was given, although I debated it for a while. And I still get really *odd* search terms leading to my blog!

For my business, I was lucky in a way that my two business partners came up with a list of names for our business one day while they had some time (before we had started) and then we all voted on the name from that list. Like you, we were in a bit of a time crunch as we had to officially register the business to get our license and we already had a tentative contract with a client, so we had to get our papers in order!

    1. In some ways the deadline was good as I HAD to make a choice, otherwise I can see it could have taken a lot longer, it took probably over half a year at least. Glass has been around for so long that so many of the names I thought of had already been used, but I like Born of Fire, it's a definite grower!

  5. Soph and I had to name our company :) We were writing a book together at the time and Soph had made up a language for it, so we took a word from that, that sounds like it should mean something in real life, but doesn't - hence Wittegen Press :). Everything else we thought of was either taken or had the wrong connotations in some places. You chosen name seems very appropriate.

    1. Thank you, it's interesting how people name things, at least I get less confused looks than when I'm saying my Blog Name ;)

I love saying hi to people who've read my blog, or are just passing through via the A to Z, or anyone not a spam bot!

P.s. If you use an iPad/iPhone and are having trouble leaving a comment on Blogger, you might have better luck using a browser that's not the default iPad one... Then from the "Comment as" drop down menu choose Name/Url (you can leave URL field blank or add your web address) or Anonymous and (hopefully) away you go! Mars xx
