D is for Diddys

To use their full name - Didymuim Lenses to protect my eyes, but most people call them Diddys.

When working with hot melting glasses (the other kind, not the face kind) you need to protect your eyes, not just from random flying glass but equally importantly infrared and ultraviolet radiation from the hot glass and to eliminate the sodium flare that happens when you're working glass in the flame.

When I was renting all my equipment the glasses drove me mad as they were far too big, but as they were a standard size, I assumed it was just something I was going to have to live with when I got my own.

Not so, not only did I find a smaller "standard" size, but they were tortoiseshell and looked more like funky sunglasses than safety equipment.

They are designed to be worn over normal glasses so they are bigger than usual, but I'm pleased to report that I don't have to keep pushing them back up my nose when I'm making my beads!

What's your funkiest, or worst, piece of safety equipment/clothing
you've ever had to use/wear?

  1. Those are awesome :) The worst safety equipment I've ever had to wear were these hideous steel toe capped boots when we were forced to take a metal work class as student apprentices. I was so very, very bad at that class :).

    1. Lol now I LOVE steel toe capped boots! But I'm a "workman's" boot kinda gal :)

I also loved my first pair of proper combat trousers (not fashion ones, ex-army seconds - can't seem to get them so easily these days). I used to wear them over my trousers when I was on my bike... I still have them, only I'd struggle to get into them let alone wearing them over jeans! God I was super skinny as an 18yr old!!

  2. They are cool glasses! And safety is very important! Oh god, I remember those steel capped boots my sister is talking about, you had to clomp around in the damn things, but they were worth it if you dropped a knife on your toe! I hated the boiler suit that went with them as well, they were designed for blokes, not girls with curves and they just never fitted right, but again, they saved a lot of clothing from the splashes of lubricating fluid that would fly around when you turned on the lathe and got the angle of the spout wrong!

    1. Lol see above for my thoughts on boots ;) Agree with you on boiler suits though, they don't suit curves at all!

I really enjoyed metal work at school, actually chose it as a subject, but it did scare me somewhat as I was hyper aware of what could go wrong, probably because the boys were so boisterous and full of bravado and I just wanted to work safely!

  3. Probably the big yellow biohazard suit. I look like something from Aliens.

  4. Love the glasses, very cool :-)

I am so lucky never have to have worn hideous safety gear, although does a pinny in domestic science at school count?!

    1. Actually out of all the safety gear mentioned so far, I think a pinny in domestic science at school might rank as the one I least like to wear... especially if it was frilly...

I'm quite bad at wearing an apron for beadmaking, I keep meaning to get one, I quite like the one that reads "saving my ass from flying glass" across it!

  5. Never thought about the light rays actually hurting the eyes - I'm learning so much about this amazing process and your pair of glasses look so cool and trendy! When I worked in a lettuce packing factory (one summer holiday) I had to wear one of those "shower cap" hats to pack all my very long hair into - boy did I look bad!!!!

    1. Yep there's lots to be careful of with glass making and not just the hot/sharp glass angle :)

Ooh never worn a shower cap hat, that might be a challenge for the hat as I have long thick hair, I'd need a rasta dreadlocks version... not that I have dreads anymore but would need the space to fit my hair in!
